This presentation will help participants to better understand the characteristics of justice-involved individuals who suffer from co-occurring mental health (MH) and substance use disorders (SUD), as well as how CDCR prepares for the community transition for individuals who have co-occurring MH/SUD, with an emphasis on individuals who have serious mental illness (SMI). Specifically, the presenters will outline the challenges faced by the co-occurring SMI/SUD population when seeking SUD residential services. Participants will gain a better understanding of the CDCR and other community resources that are available to support community-based providers that serve the SMI/SUD population, and will have an opportunity to share with the presenters concerns they have and experiences they’ve encountered when trying to serve justice involved-individuals with SMI/SUD.
